Renanthera and Vanda Orchids – update, differences, growing methods

Since some of you wanted an update on my Renantheras, here is a discussion between the Renantheras that I own and my Vandas. I am noticing quite the difference, so it’s worth discussing.

Although both are Vandaceous orchids, the Renantheras seem to prefer more moisture around their roots and also like being potted in inorganic medium. They are growing nice and root production goes smoothly. In the past I have tried mounting the Renanthera and even with daily soaks the root growth wasn’t great and the orchid didn;t seem happy. She seems to be much happier potted and growth returned to normal. So I believe there is a difference in this regard between these related species.
With this in mind I have decided to pot my complex cross, the Kagawara. A few people told me theirs are doing very well potted, unlike Vandas, thus there might be some Renanthera genes remained in this hybrid as well, at least when it comes to watering preferences.
As for the Vandas, bouncing back was a breeze, they are starting to act normal and it didn’t take long either. My Bangkok Sunset has a spike, finally! roots grow fast and leaves are produced as normal, no more pots for Vandas sadly.
