How to buy a healthy Phalaenopsis Orchid
Since it’s the season we are purchasing gifts and Orchids are not missing from all flower shops and garden centers, here are a few things to look for when choosing a new Phalaenopsis orchid!

To make sure we are purchasing the best orchid available we need to make sure that it looks healthy, thus a good inspection is needed.
Firstly the root system must be in good condition. Dry roots are silvery green, while wet roots are green. This color means the roots are healthy, what we don;t want to see are dark brown, mushy roots or a total lack of roots in the pot.
The stem of the orchid needs to be in good condition too, discoloration and dark patches are not a good sign. The crown must be green as well, a dark patch in the crown means the orchid might suffer from crown rot. More on crown rot here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCZXr2HgRBM&t=1s
The leaves must be stiff and green, not leathery and limp. Dark or discolored spots are not a good sign and can mean the orchid suffers from infections, sunburn or pests. Limp leaves usually means dehydration.
Flowers should look appealing and not have coloration streaks, such as the ones shown here http://www.aos.org/orchids/orchid-pests-diseases/virus.aspx
Spikes and flowers can harbor pests, so inspect them as well for bugs like aphids, mealy bugs or even spider mites.
