Placing Phalaenopsis Orchids in the fridge to make them bloom?

Lately I’ve noticed a few comments regarding inducing blooming in Phalaenopsis by the use of the refrigerator. So I guess it is time to tackle this subject and see if this is a thing we should do or not.

From the get go we should know that Phalaenopsis orchids are warm growers, they do not experience very low temperatures in their natural habitat, thus they are not prepared to handle them. This applies to Phalaenopsis hybrids as well, if parents cannot tolerate the low temperatures, most probably their hybrids won;t wither.
I would suggest you don;t place Phalaenopsis orchids in the refrigerator, find other ways to decrease the temperature. You are aiming for 17-18 degrees celsius, not less, this should be enough to initiate some spikes.
