Orchid identification – Phalaenopsis Kaoda Twinkle ‘Chocolate Drop’

So this is Phal. Kaoda Twinkle ‘Chocolate Drop’, a cross between the species Phal. schilleriana and Phal. Malvarosa Valentine Pearl. It has an AM/AOS award and my isn’t she a beauty! 😀

This Phalaenopsis hybrid is still considered a complex hybrid, evben though one of her direct parents is a species. However, I cannot say it isn’t a very succesful one! Appearance wise it appears it didn;t inherit anything from the schilleriana, however the fragrance is there! I think it does have a very similar fragrance to her parent and is more fragrant during the first hours of the morning.

The petals are dark purple and in reality it appears much darker than on camera, which tries to compensate with exposure. The flowers are waxy in texture and are of a medium size. The lip is a very pretty white pinkish tone that contrasts with the dark petals.

This orchid is sometimes labeled as a mini Phalaenopsis, but it really is not. However the foliage is not large and is very compact, making it a good choice for small grow spaces.

For any Phalaenopsis lover this is a great addition to their collection, even for a non Phal. lover I might say. Compactness, striking colors and lovely fragrance, great features in one orchid.
