Phalaenopsis Orchids in clay medium – pros and cons
Here is an update on the Phalaenopsis orchids in clay medium. I have been asked a few times already if this looks like a viable medium to grow them in and what are the pros and cons.

As a general idea, Phalaenopsis orchids are very hardy and can be grown in a variety of media, as long as it is not toxic and provides the good air/moisture ratio they need.
As for pros and cons, they will be very personal and depend a lot on environment and life style.
For me the pros are:
– no regular repottings required
– no need for soaking or bringing orchids to the sink
– no bad smells
– no danger of compacting over time
– no danger of suffocation through sogginess
Possible cons:
– no way to see the roots in the pot
– roots stick to clay pots worse than plastic
