Saving Orchid from root rot, dehydration and mealy bugs
Time to start the sick Phalaenopsis videos 🙂 Today we take a look at a Phalaenopsis which suffered from root rot, dehydration and also has a severe case of mealy bugs.

First I will remove the majority of mealy bugs so I don’t spread them all over the place. I found a good way to do so it with a cotton swab soaked in alcohol. Mealy bugs usually hide in crowns, leaf joins, underneath the leaves, but also in tiny placed in flower spikes and flowers.
The let’s take a look at the root system. There are only 2 aerial roots still alive, but they will be enough to hydrate my orchid and give it a lead. No roots at all would have been worse. The dead roots are all cut away and thrown together with the old medium.
I am using my standard inorganic and clay pot type of growth and place the orchid on top of the medium. As a rule it’s a better idea to not bury the axis, all leaves must be on top of the medium.
A spray of alcohol and water will finish up for the day. In the next days she will remain quarantined and away from my other plants. Any visible mealy bug will be removed manually and the aerial roots will be hydrated on a daily basis. And this should be a good fresh start for this orchid 🙂
