Losing Phalaenopsis to stem rot + Why Orchid keikis don’t generally grow without the mother plant

You get a Phalaenopsis orchid spike, you put it in a glass with moss, you wait and you get keikis that you can separate and grow further, right? WRONG! Keikis don’t only need moisture to develop, not do they need only nutrients. They need actual food, developed through photosynthesis by the mother orchid!
