New Phalaenopsis Orchids – spotting & fixing dehydration problems
I have received 3 very pretty Phalaenopsis orchids and one is even very nicely fragrant! But we seem to have some problems by the looks of things. So let’s see what the problems are and try to fix them asap!

I have received these orchids in the morning time, so I had enough light and time to properly examine them and take the necessary measures. If you receive your orchids in the late evening or at night, better to wait for the morning time to make sure you have the time to properly observe them.
From the start we see that the leaves don;t look too well. They are floppy and leathery, they don’t want to sit straight and look pale in places, even if the flowers look good. This is a clear sign of dehydration, so when we are faced with this it’s time to look at the roots.
At a first glance the roots seem alive, but only after soaking them for 10-15 minutes we can properly asses them. Luckily the roots on these orchids greened up and look nice, so the problem is not enough watering, rather than root loss.
Also there are many pale patches on some leaves, this is a sign that these orchids were kept in too much sun. Though the damage is permanent, it doesn’t mean they will die.
For now I soaked all of them for 15 minutes, placed them in a bright but shaded place at room temperature. No need for repotting just yet as the medium doesn’t smell bad at all, but soon they will need to go into fresh new media, even if they have buds.
I also do not notice any type of bugs, but this doesn’t mean they are clean. I will quarantine and observe them for at least one month. I will come back with more updates soon 🙂
