Roots on a healthy Phalaenopsis orchid should be silvery if dry and green if wet. They should be full of substance, not brown, mushy, or papery.
Leaves should be stiff, green and almost glossy. Try to avoid orchids with yellowing leaves, dark and sunken spots, discolored spots and patches, weird ring patterns and other spots that look unhealthy. More on Phalaenopsis problems here https://youtu.be/zGjxPQ3EzcU
The stem and crown should also be green, not dark or dry. They are the main growth points of orchids and they should be in good order.
Flowers can indicate how long an orchid will be in bloom for. Here is how to extend blooming time to its full potential https://youtu.be/mHDoyH0tRYc
