Orchid family portrait – Phalaenopsis schilleriana and hybrids

Today we take a look at a mother orchid and her daughters, the schilleriana and Jiaho’s Pink Girls!

Phalaenopsis schilleriana is one of the most popular orchid species and is very used in hybridization as well. More on the species and where it naturally grows here http://www.orchidspecies.com/phlalschilleriana.htm

Its hybrids, the Jiaho’s Pink Girl, are a varied mini orchid jhybrid with very similar looking flowers and exactly the same fragrance. You can see the parentage here http://apps.rhs.org.uk/horticulturaldatabase/orchidregister/orchiddetails.asp?ID=137202

Overall they are a joy to grow but the schilleriana does have some sensitive roots, so be careful with not suffocating them!
