Cattleya Orchid buds, sheaths and spikes – small practical guide
Today we talk about Cattleya orchids, as it appears to be the season for them to produce buds and sheaths!

Cattleyas are one of the easiest orchids to keep, if you can provide bright light and warm temperatures. here is my older care guide here https://youtu.be/QhIPWC3s1s0
This video was inspired by Maria’s video https://youtu.be/CTclXdiIFtg which reminds me of my experience with the parent of the Purple Cscade https://youtu.be/07OYSD4fk8E

Some Cattleyas will bloom with sheaths, as soon as the pseudobulb is matured, others will wait even 9 or 10 months to bloom from a sheath. Cattleya purpurata and mossiae usually bloom once a year and the sheath will remain green until spring. Even green sheaths can pose some issues for the buds https://youtu.be/1_Im9pemIT8
Other Cattleyas, such as Sophronitis types and aclandiae, will not produce sheaths, bud buds directly. Usually the buds develop together with the pseudobulb and the blooms appear very soon.

Hybrids can act very differently than species, they can be both unifolate and bifoliate. they typically bloom on the unifoliate pseudobulbs, if they are slightly stressed.
