Does cutting old Dendrobium canes promote more flowers?

Since I’ve read about this idea on a blog, I though I should investigate it further. Personally it doesn’t make sense, but I might be wrong. I think that it’s dangerous to cut old canes any way, since they provide nutrients for new growth, but would this be acceptable for more flowers?
