Catasetum orchids update – first flower spike!
As per your request, here is an update on my Catasetum type orchids, the Cycnodes Wine Delight and Monn. Millenium Magic Witchcraft, also known as the black orchid.
I can only say one thing: these guys grow and they grow fast! they require tons and tons of water and fertilizer and, if you treat them right, you’ll be rewarded at the end of summer. My Cycnodes Wine Delight is producing a flower spike now which I’m hoping to have in bloom at the beginning of fall.
The Millenium Magic doesn’t seem to be so far along, last year’s growth was smaller than the previous one, which is never a good sign. This year’s growth appears to be as developed as last year, so I am not raising my hopes too high for this one. I wish I will have a spike, but I think I probably won’t.
The good news is that with good care this year I can obtain a better growth next year, so I am doing the best that I can. Luckily these orchids are anything but fussy. As long as you give them water and fertilizer they should be absolutely fine. Bright light is a plus I think.
