Gongora leucochila Orchid – The mother of dragons!

A special orchid is in bloom today, the beautiful Gongora with her dragon flowers in all her splendor! let’s see why this one is special!

Gongora leucochila is a species orchid, native to Mexico and Panama. It is classified as a warm to cool grower, but I would suggest it does better in intermediate temperatures.

The most astonishing aspect of this orchid are her blooms! shaped as birds or, with a bit of imagination, dragon like creatures, her goal is to attract a male bee as her pollinator and it does that successfully!

Flashy colors are just not needed for this display, as the buttery whites and brown dotting are enough to give the flower an out of this world quality.

This orchid is also fragrant, sweet, plasticky and slightly fishy, the scent is not very mild, but not overwhelming either. it is a nice addition and different Gongoras have different scents. Who cares about fragrance though, have you seen the flowers? they look like dragons!

Flowers are displayed on a pendant flower spike, which can be much longer than my display and hold more flowers. Also each pseudobulb can produce multiple spikes, how about that? a swarm of tiny dragons! 😀

Yes, you might have noticed I am fascinated by this orchid and with good reason. Next orchids on my wishlist? some more Gongoras 😀
