How to care for Bulbophyllum orchids – watering, fertilizing, reblooming
Bulbophyllum orchids are the largest group of orchids in nature, with about 2000 known species. Many beautiful representatives are available to orchid growers too, so let’s talk about some general care knowledge.
Luckily, these orchids are not very hard to maintain healthy in a home. Temperature wise they do best in intermediate temperatures, between 20-26 degrees Celsius should be ideal for them. Humidity doesn’t seem to be the major factor in their care, they withstand low humidity very well.
Light should be intermediate as well, they don;t need very bright light to bloom and do well. Slightly more than what Phalaenopsis orchids would like should be enough for these orchids, so eastern exposures are idea, while southern exposures should be shaded.
The most important aspect of their care is making sure they are always moist, they do not like to stay dry for long periods of time. In between watering the media should dry out slightly but not completely.
Many species and hybrids have splendid blooms, but some poses a foul smell, so before purchasing one read the description carefully. Some Bulbophyllums on the other hand have a nice fragrance, so chose the ones that appeal to you the most and that can be kept in your conditions.
