Making an elegant Vanda Orchid Basket
Today it’s time to DIY! I decided to try and make a more good looking presentation for Vandas, or any epiphyte orchid you might want to grow in a basket!

Vanda baskets are usually pretty expensive, but I found some in my local garden center. I decided to coat them with a normal, gloss finish spray paint and hopefully that will protect it from water a bit more.
I am also using coconut fiber. This material doesn’t degrade all that fast, so the orchid can sit in it for quite a while. This medium is not meant to maintain much moisture, it cannot be used as medium in very hot environments without special attention. For a Vanda it will do though!
I used galvanized wire, straightened with a drilling machine. here’s a tutorial https://youtu.be/n0eIFyfGvd8
The water is retained in the basket due to the flooring! for me this is perfect, but for other climates it might not be. So keep this in mind if you ever want to DIY a basket.
