Orchid identification – Lycaste aromatica, the cinnamon Orchid
I am really happy to present to you the Lycaste aromatica orchid in bloom, as this is one of those orchids I’ve been dying to have for the past 2 years. And it’s not a let down!

The Lycaste aromatica is an orchid species found in Central America and is well known in the hobby for its wonderful fragrance, so let’s just start with that!
Many people would describe it as smelling like cinnamon and I agree! but it’s not the typical powder cinnamon smell, but rather the cinnamon essential oil. If you ever used the scented oil, you know what I’m talking about. It’s quite powerful and mouth watering to me. I am not at all disappointing, the wait was well worth it from this point of view.
The flowers are not big at all, they measure about 3-4 cm across and have a lovely deep yellow color. The orchid produces thin flower spikes at the base of its immature new growth, each one bearing one single flower. Multiple spikes can be produced though.
The orchid itself is not a tiny being and the pseudobulbs are quite large and fat. Don’t be scared if it will lose its leaves at the end of the growth season, this is a deciduous orchid and it’s supposed to lose them 🙂 I will be back with care tips when I get to know her better. Enjoy!
