Overwintering Pleione Orchids
Since it is autumn in my part of the world, it is time to over winter the Pleione orchids. At this point they are just bulbs without leaves or roots.
What I did was remove the bulbs from the dry media and cut away all the dead roots, remains of leaves and sheaths. The older bulbs are dead and they need to be removed as well. new growth can be seen already at the base of the bulbs, this is the future plant that will develop in the spring.
To over winter them I just placed all the bulbs in a sealed plastic bag and placed them in the refrigerator, as I cannot constantly keep low temps in my kitchen balcony.
The bad thing is that I discovered an infestation of spider mites, once again, so I had to throw away some of the more infested bulbs. Hopefully the low temperatures will kill off the remaining mites.
