Being that I grew orchids in 2 very different climates and geographical locations, I drew some conclusions over the years. The most important factor that helps initiate the spikes is temperature. A drop to 17-18 C is enough to trigger spikes. Light intensity or day length never had any influence on my Phalaenopsis orchids https://youtu.be/OOPCISOgQEw
In my current location I get the first spikes in late October, if I am lucky, or in November https://youtu.be/YAJb6d_KILQ and it’s not the day that influences spikes but the difference in temperature.
Complex hybrids have a few renowned species in their parentage, check your orchids here http://bluenanta.com/orchid/ These species come mainly from locations with very little day length variation throughout the year. Here is an example, the amabilis http://www.orchidspecies.com/phalamablis.htm so, from a pure evolutionary point of view, they couldn’t have adapted to something they never experienced.
So since I have been asked, I don’t believe day length has anything to do with it, I would focus on the temperature variation.
