Vanda Orchids for low light + using plastic pots and Synthic
Today we take a look at the Vanda orchids and take a new course of action to make our life easier with them. I decided I like Synthic in this set up, so let’s see how this works long term!

The Rhynchorides (Perreiraara) Bangkok Sunset, one of my crown jewel orchids is still recovering from the sunburn it suffered last summer. Of all my Vandas, she is the most affected one. Well this is a mistake from my part, since I did not take into account the light sensitivity this orchid has.
Here is an interesting artivle on it and its parentage http://www.motesorchids.com/fogblog/2016/12/25/the-success-of-perr-bangkok-sunset
Therefore this orchid is really not suited for extreme light conditions and will easily get burned. It is very suited for moderate and bright shade conditions, isn’t that ideal for home growing?
The new set up I decided to adopt is nothing innovative, it’s just a way for me to maintain moisture around the roots for longer, without soaking them for an amount of time. I finally found a good use for Synthic, which has some major down sides, more on it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkVIIMe1Ar0
One or two strains of Synthic maintain the moisture around Vanda roots for an optimum amount of time in my climate, thus I don’t need to saturate the roots, nor do I need to water them every day or multiple times per day. The plastic pots I use are transparent, have extra ventilation holes and act merely as a basket, in lack of a big basket. In essence, it is an inorganic version of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cD_q-Ms02yc
Another plus is that they keep the Synthic from dripping for a million years. Overall I won’t name this set up in a way, simply because it is a ‘trick’ of bare root growing, not potted, not in medium, not in water (..culture pfff, I don’t even soak them anymore I just dunk them), thus no need to invent a fancy name for an adaptation of an already existing technique, that would just confuse people..
Here’s my Vanda orchids potted (really potted and with medium) and how the roots looked like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uf9mFYLTKC0
