Which Dendrobium orchids need a winter rest?
Because this is the season in which some Dendrobium orchids need a winter rest, I get a lot of questions on Dendrobium Phalaenopsis, or orchid beginners which don;t know which Dendrobiums need a winter rest. So here is a video to know if your Dendrobium needs a rest.
The Dendrobium Phalaenopsis produces a tall flower spike with blooms that resemble the Phalaenopsis orchid. The spike can come from the top of the cane, or from between the leaves. This Dendrobium is really easy to find in any store and usually comes without an ID tag. This one does NOT need a winter rest!
Dendrobium Nobile orchids produce flowers along the canes, very close to them. They do not form a tall flower spike on which flowers are positioned. These orchids can again be easily found ins tores and usually come without an ID tag. These Dendrobiums NEED a winter rest!
Dendrobiums species which encounter a dry cool period in the winter time are not usually found in any store, but rather specialized orchid nurseries. They usually come with a tag. Many of them NEED a winter rest! so check the tag of your orchid and give it a google search 🙂
